The single most useful fact about swimming on this coast is that a barrier reef runs offshore for much of its length, breaking the Caribbean swell before it reaches the sand. The result is that the default condition on the sheltered bays is calm, clear and shallow, which is a rarity on an ocean coast. The trick is simply knowing which beaches sit behind that protection and which face the open water.
The flattest water of all is not strictly on the mainland. Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres, a short ferry from Cancun, is famous for shallow turquoise water you can wade through for a long way, with almost no waves on a normal day. We include it because it is the calmest swim within easy reach of the Riviera Maya and well worth the boat.
On the mainland, the reef lagoons at Puerto Morelos and the quiet coves around Soliman Bay and Akumal give you that same gentle, glassy feel, while the north facing Cancun beaches such as Caracol stay sheltered from the prevailing swell. Playa Norte
The benchmark for calm in this corner of Mexico. Shallow, warm and turquoise, with water you can wade through for many metres and barely a wave on a settled day. A short ferry from Cancun and worth every minute of it.
Playa Caracol
The most sheltered beach in the Cancun hotel zone, facing the calm bay rather than the open sea. Shallow and gentle, with shade and facilities close by, it is the easiest calm swim if you are based in Cancun itself.
Puerto Morelos
The reef sits unusually close to shore here, so the lagoon between sand and reef stays calm and clear. A sleepy town swim with a real local feel, ideal for slow floating rather than splashing about in surf.
Soliman Bay
A quiet residential cove protected by reef, with calm shallow water and a fringe of palms. There is little in the way of facilities, so bring what you need, but the reward is one of the most peaceful gentle swims on the coast.
Akumal
The turtle bay is also one of the calmest, sheltered by the reef that brings the wildlife in. Early mornings are glassy and clear before the tour boats arrive, which is the time to have your gentle swim and snorkel.
Xpu Ha
A wide bay that shelves gently into deeper water, so you get a long shallow apron before it drops away. Calm on most days and rarely crowded outside the beach clubs, it is a comfortable family paced swim.
Who it suits and who should skip it
If you want to swim rather than be knocked about, this is one of the best coasts in the Caribbean for it, because the reef does the calming for you. Lap swimmers, anxious paddlers, older swimmers and anyone who simply wants to float and read the sky will all be happy on the bays we rank above.
If you came for waves, this is the wrong shoreline, and you should head for the open eastern Cancun beaches such as Playa Delfines, where the swell that we warn families away from is exactly the point. Surfers and bodyboarders chase that side; calm water swimmers should stay behind the reef.
The honest seasonal note, again, is sargassum. The same reef calm that makes these bays so gentle can also trap floating seaweed against the shore in a heavy summer week, which clouds the water and spoils the swim. Check recent reports close to your trip, and remember that conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
