Arena Gorda sits just north of Bavaro and lives up to its name, which means thick or fat sand. This is a wide, generous beach, a broad sweep of soft white sand backed by palms and some of the largest resorts in Punta Cana. If Bavaro can feel busy, Arena Gorda often feels roomier simply because the sand runs so deep.
The water shares the same easygoing character as the rest of the coast. A reef offshore keeps it calm and shallow on most days, so swimming is gentle and reassuring, and the broad sand means you can usually find space to settle even when the resorts behind are full. It is an easy, uncomplicated beach in the best sense.
The familiar Punta Cana caveat applies. The beach is public, so you can walk its length, but the big resorts hold the frontage and their loungers and shade are for guests. There are fewer public vendors here than on livelier Bavaro, so casual visitors should plan where they will base themselves rather than expect easy public service on the sand.
Come to Arena Gorda for width, space and calm water beside the big resorts. If you want more public life and beach bars, Bavaro to the south is busier and easier for non guests, while Playa Macao further north brings real surf. The sand is public by law, so you can walk and swim along the length, though loungers and shade mostly belong to the resorts behind the palms.
Big resorts hold most of the frontage, so their loungers and service are for guests or day pass holders. We confirm any venue and its terms before listing it.
Arena Gorda lies just north of Bavaro along the main Punta Cana resort coast, a short drive from the airport by taxi or arranged transfer. Public access points sit between the resorts, so look for the marked beach entries to reach the open sand.
Bring water, sun cover and cash for a day pass or beach bar if you are not staying on the frontage, since most loungers belong to resorts and public vendors are fewer here. The water is usually calm, but keep children within depth away from resort lifeguard areas.

It translates roughly as thick or fat sand, a fitting name for a beach known for its wide, deep band of soft sand. The breadth of the beach is its signature feature, giving it a roomier feel than much of Bavaro.
Yes. Like the rest of the Punta Cana coast it is reef protected, so the water stays mostly calm, shallow and clear, which makes for easy, reassuring swimming on settled days. Keep children within depth.
Yes. All Dominican beaches are public, so you can walk and swim along Arena Gorda. The large resorts hold the frontage, though, so loungers and shade are generally reserved for their guests or day pass holders.
It often feels roomier because the sand is so wide and deep, even when the resorts are full. It also has fewer public vendors, so it is quieter for non guests but needs a little more planning.
The drier months from December to April bring the calmest, clearest water and the steadiest sun. Mornings are coolest and quietest before the day crowds and any afternoon breeze build up.
