A vast ribbon of soft pale sand south of Agios Prokopios, organised only at its northern tip and free and open for most of its length. Walk a few minutes past the loungers and you have wild dunes, clear shallow water and space for everyone, all for nothing.
Alyko
A cluster of small sandy coves wrapped in a rare cedar forest on the far south coast, undeveloped and free. There are no organised rows and barely a canteen, so bring water and shade. The wildest, prettiest free swim on the island.
Mikri Vigla
A windswept double bay split by a rocky headland, loved by surfers and free to use, with low dunes and golden sand. The kite crowd takes one side, but the other stays open and quiet. Cheap, scenic and rarely full.
Orkos
A string of small undeveloped coves between Mikri Vigla and Plaka, reached on rough tracks and free of any club. There are no facilities at all, which is the point. Pack a picnic and you have a quiet patch of sand to yourself.
Agios Prokopios
The island's most famous sand, organised and busy in its centre but with free public ends that stay open. Go early or walk to the quieter edges for a beautiful swim without the lounger fee. Easy to reach by bus, which keeps the day cheap.
Pyrgaki
A calm, shallow bay near the end of the southwest road, quiet, free and backed by a couple of tavernas rather than a club. The water is gentle and the crowd thin. A good value choice for a slow, cheap afternoon away from the resorts.

The beach to watch on a budget is the organised core of Agia Anna and central Agios Prokopios in peak season, where loungers and bars rent much of the front and the bus crowd arrives early. They are fine beaches, but go for the free ends first thing or drive a little further south where the sand turns wild and open.
The trade for the genuinely free beaches is the rough track and the lack of facilities. Alyko and Orkos mean a dusty drive and no shop, so bring water, snacks and shade, and a hat for the open dunes.
