Shallow calm water, shade and cabanas, away from the South Beach scene.

The verdict

  • Best forFamilies who want calm shallow water, shade and easy facilities rather than the buzz and bare scene of South Beach.
  • Top pickCrandon Park on Key Biscayne for its shallow sandbar, cabanas and gentle water, with Matheson Hammock's atoll pool best for toddlers.
  • One thing to knowThe calmest, most child friendly water is on Key Biscayne and the bay, not the wind and shore break of the open Atlantic at South Beach.

Miami is famous for the scene at South Beach, but that is not where most families are happiest. The open Atlantic there carries wind and a shore break that small children find hard work, and the crowds and parking are a test of patience. The good news is that the city holds some genuinely excellent family beaches a short drive away, where the water is shallow and calm and the shade and facilities are built for a day with children.

The calmest water sits on Key Biscayne and along the bay. Crandon Park has a long shallow sandbar and cabanas to rent, while the enclosed atoll pool at Matheson Hammock is about as flat as salt water gets, a tidal lagoon made for toddlers. Bill Baggs at the tip of Key Biscayne adds a lighthouse, picnic groves and a gentler, greener feel than the city beaches.

Further up the shore the choice widens. North Beach is the quiet, shaded face of Miami Beach, far calmer than its southern end, and a short drive north the Broadwalk at Hollywood Beach gives children a flat promenade of bikes, ice cream and easy Atlantic swimming. Lummus Park at South Beach earns its place for facilities, but it is the busiest and most adult option here.

We have ranked the beaches below by how easy and calm a family day tends to be, weighing the water, the shade, the parking and the facilities together rather than the postcard view. Each entry links to its full guide so you can check access and conditions before you load the car.

Ranked by how easy a family day is

Six of the best family beaches in Miami

Shallow calm water and shade on Key Biscayne and the bay.

01
Key Biscayne

Crandon Park

The best all round family beach in Miami, with a long shallow sandbar that keeps the water calm and waist deep far out, lifeguards, cabanas to rent and broad shade and picnic space behind the sand. The parking is ample and the feel is relaxed rather than scene driven, which is exactly why families return to it again and again.

02
Coral Gables

Matheson Hammock Park

Home to a man made atoll pool, a flat tidal lagoon flushed by the bay that is about as gentle as salt water gets, which makes it the standout choice for toddlers and nervous first swimmers. Add shade, picnic tables and a calm marina setting and you have a low stress half day, though it is a swim spot rather than a long surf beach.

03
Key Biscayne

Bill Baggs Cape Florida

A state park at the tip of Key Biscayne with calm, often quiet water, a historic lighthouse to climb, bike paths and picnic groves under the pines. It feels greener and gentler than the city beaches, the swimming is easy in most conditions, and there is enough to do beyond the sand to fill a full family day out.

04
Hollywood

Hollywood Beach

A short drive north of the city, this wide Atlantic beach is paired with the Broadwalk, a flat paved promenade of family resorts, bike hire, ice cream and casual food that children adore. The sea is open Atlantic so watch the shore break, but the easy walking, the gentle slope and the relaxed family feel make it a reliable day out.

05
Miami Beach

North Beach

The calm, residential face of Miami Beach, far quieter than its southern end, with a shaded park behind the sand, picnic space and a local family feel. The Atlantic here is the same open sea as South Beach but the crowd is gentler and the parking easier, a good choice if you want Miami Beach without the scene.

South Beach

Lummus Park

The South Beach strand earns a place for its lifeguards, wide sand, playgrounds and full facilities, all backed by the famous Art Deco promenade. The trade is the crowd, the lively adult scene and the parking, and the open Atlantic carries more wind and shore break, so it suits older children and families happy in the middle of the buzz.

The honest read

Choosing the right beach for the right age

The honest read is that the best Miami family beach depends on the age of your children. For toddlers and nervous swimmers, the enclosed atoll pool at Matheson Hammock and the shallow sandbar at Crandon Park are in a class of their own, flat and shallow where the open Atlantic is not. For older confident children, the wider choice opens up, including the lively South Beach strand at Lummus Park.

Shade and facilities matter as much as the water with young children, and this is where the Key Biscayne parks shine. Crandon Park, Matheson Hammock and Bill Baggs all offer real shade, picnic space, parking and cabanas, which makes a long day far easier than the exposed city beaches. The trade is a short drive and a park entry fee, which most families find well worth it.

Two practical notes. The open Atlantic beaches carry more wind and shore break than the sheltered bay and Key Biscayne, so judge the day before letting small children into the surf, and keep everyone in the lifeguarded zones. Conditions are typical of an open sea and never guaranteed, lifeguard hours and facilities change with the season, so check before you set out and go early for the easiest parking.

The club layer

A shaded base for a family day

See Miami beach clubs

Families in Miami often want a fixed, shaded base rather than a bare patch of sand, and the city offers two routes to it. The Key Biscayne parks rent cabanas and loungers right by the calm water, while the hotel beach clubs along Mid Beach and South Beach offer day beds, pools and food service for a more polished day, usually at a higher spend. Day pass terms, opening status and any minimum spend shift with the season, so we keep the live list on the directory. Good questions

Before you go

What is the best family beach in Miami?

Crandon Park on Key Biscayne is the standout, with a long shallow sandbar, calm water, lifeguards, cabanas to rent and plenty of shade and picnic space. For very young children the enclosed atoll pool at Matheson Hammock Park is even gentler, a flat tidal lagoon that suits toddlers far better than the open Atlantic surf.

Where is the calmest water for children in Miami?

The bay side and Key Biscayne hold the calmest water. The atoll pool at Matheson Hammock is the flattest of all, while Crandon Park and Bill Baggs on Key Biscayne stay gentle behind their shallow shelves. The open Atlantic beaches of South Beach and Mid Beach have more shore break and wind, so they suit older, confident swimmers.

Is South Beach good for families?

It can work, with wide sand, lifeguards and full facilities at Lummus Park, but it is the busiest and most adult of the Miami beaches, with a lively scene and limited parking. Families who want calm shallow water, shade and a quieter feel are usually happier on Key Biscayne or at the gentler North Beach further up the shore.

Do Miami family beaches have lifeguards and facilities?

The main public beaches such as Crandon Park, Bill Baggs, Lummus Park and North Beach have lifeguards in season along with restrooms, showers and food nearby, and the Key Biscayne parks have ample parking and cabanas. Facilities and lifeguard hours change with the season, so check before you go and treat sea conditions as typical and never guaranteed.

Are there family beaches near Miami beyond the city beaches?

Yes. A short drive north, Hollywood Beach pairs a gentle Atlantic with its paved Broadwalk promenade lined with family resorts, ice cream and bike hire, which children love. Within the city, the Key Biscayne parks remain the calmest and greenest choice, trading the South Beach buzz for shade, shallow water and room to spread out.
