Reading the Maui calendar
Maui has two broad seasons, a dry summer and a wetter winter, but the island's real story is its microclimates and its calendar of natural events. The leeward south and west coasts stay sunny and calm for most of the year, while winter brings rain, big surf to the north shore and, best of all, humpback whales to the channel offshore. When you go shapes the sea, the scenery and the price.
This guide breaks Maui down month by month, with an honest read on the air, the sea, the rain, the crowds and the verdict for each. In short, summer brings the calmest leeward swimming and the biggest crowds, winter brings whales and dramatic surf with more rain, and the shoulder months of spring and autumn quietly offer the best balance of all.

The months that matter
January through March is whale season at its peak, when hundreds of humpbacks gather in the channel between Maui, Lanai and Molokai to breed and calve, often visible from the beach. It is also the wettest stretch and the season of big north shore surf, so swimming shifts to the protected south and west bays. Cooler, greener and dramatic, with the island at its most alive offshore.
April and May are a quiet sweet spot. The winter rain eases, the leeward beaches turn reliably sunny and calm, the last whales linger into early spring and the crowds and prices drop between the winter and summer peaks. The sea is warming and gentle. For many travellers this is the most rewarding window of the year on Maui.
June through August is peak summer, with hot, sunny days, the calmest leeward seas and the warmest water, ideal for swimming, snorkelling and paddling. It is also the busiest and priciest season, driven by school holidays, so beaches and parking fill early and booking ahead is essential. Mornings are glorious and calm before the trade winds build.
September and October are the second sweet spot, often the quietest months of all. The weather stays warm and dry on the leeward coasts, crowds thin once the summer holidays end and prices soften, while larger swells begin to return to the north shore in October. A superb time for calm south side swimming with the island at its most relaxed.

What is the best time to visit Maui?
The shoulder months of April, May, September and October offer the best balance, with warm, calm seas on the leeward coasts, thinner crowds and softer prices than the summer and winter peaks. Summer is sunniest and calmest for swimming but busiest, while winter brings whales and surf. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed.
When is whale season on Maui?
Humpback whales are in Maui waters from roughly late October to early May, with the peak from January through early March, when sightings from the beach and on boat trips are at their best. The channel between Maui, Lanai and Molokai is the heart of the action. February is often the single best month for numbers.
When is the sea calmest for swimming?
The dry summer months from May to September bring the calmest leeward seas and the warmest water, ideal for swimming and snorkelling on the south and west coasts. In winter, swell lifts the surf on exposed and north shore beaches, so calm swimming shifts to the protected bays. Mornings are calmest all year.
When is the surf biggest on Maui?
The big surf arrives on the north and west shores in winter, roughly from November to March, when powerful swells light up expert breaks such as Hookipa. Larger swells start to return in October. Summer is calmer on those coasts. These winter waves are for experienced riders, and exposed beaches can be unsafe to swim.
What is the rainy season on Maui?
The wetter season runs from about November to March, with the heaviest rain often in winter and March commonly the wettest month. Even then, the leeward south and west coasts stay relatively dry and sunny while the windward and upcountry areas catch most of the rain. Showers are often brief, and conditions are typical rather than guaranteed.
When is Maui least crowded and cheapest?
The quieter, better value windows are the shoulder months, especially April and May after the winter holidays and September into early December before the festive rush. Crowds thin and prices soften compared with the busy summer and winter peaks. The weather in spring and autumn is often excellent, making these months a smart time to visit.
