Manta reads its address correctly. It sits on the Tigne seafront in Sliema, the busy strolling edge of the Maltese mainland, and instead of pretending to be a beach it commits to being a lido: a pool, ranked sunbeds and a Mediterranean fusion kitchen arranged on stone and decking above the water. The gamble it makes, and mostly wins, is that in a country of famous bays the most valuable thing it owns is the sightline. Come for the middle of the day and Manta is a calm, well run pool club: a lounger, a cool dip, a waiter who arrives before you have to look for one, and that fortress skyline holding still across the harbour. The privacy is relative rather than absolute, this is a lido on a public seafront and not a hidden cove, so what you are paying for is order and comfort in a busy district, a reserved bed and a kitchen that does not make you leave to eat well.

The food earns its billing. Manta runs its Mediterranean fusion kitchen with real intent, from a morning menu through a bottomless brunch to a longer dinner, and the plates are meant to hold guests who never intended to swim. As the light drops the club leans into its Golden Hour service, and an in house DJ and a percussionist lift the mood a notch, elegant rather than frantic. It is a place you can arrive at for lunch and leave after a sundowner without ever feeling you have overstayed.

Where it falls short is honest and structural. There is no sand, the swimming is the pool and the harbour rather than a bay, and on a peak weekend the value question is real: the same money spent north buys you an actual beach day at Golden Bay or a quieter cove. Manta answers that with location and polish, not with shoreline, and if the skyline lunch is what you want it is worth the premium, while if you want to feel the sea on a beach it is the wrong booking.

The stretch Manta occupies, around Tigne Point at the mouth of Sliema, is a rocky urban coast rather than a beach, the kind of front where locals swim off flat shelves and ladders and the sea is right there without a grain of sand in sight. It is a short, easy walk from the Sliema ferries and the Strand, which is precisely its convenience. Reaching Manta is the easy part. It sits within walking distance of central Sliema and a short hop across the creek from St Julian’s, well served by bus and by the Valletta ferry, so a car is a convenience rather than a need and parking in Tigne is the usual town scramble. Booking works through the club’s own site for both a table and a sunbed, and the lido is clear that a bed is confirmed only once payment is made, held for two hours, and cancellable up to 48 hours before. On a summer weekend that policy is the difference between a water side lounger and a back row, so reserve early.
