The verdict

Best for. Families, groups and anyone who wants a reliable, spacious Malibu beach day with lifeguards, parking and facilities all in one place rather than a pretty but bare cove.

Best spot. The central stretch near the main lifeguard towers and the county lot, with room to spread out and the snack bar and restrooms close behind the sand.

Know this. This is the open Pacific, cool with real surf and rip currents, so swim near a staffed tower and under the flags rather than treating it as a calm lagoon.

The honest read

If Malibu has one beach that simply works, it is Zuma. Where the famous coves trade on drama and the celebrity stretches trade on their address, Zuma trades on the thing a real beach day actually needs, which is space and ease. It is a clean three mile sweep of pale sand on the open Pacific in the west of the coast, wide enough that even a hot summer weekend never feels truly packed, and backed by the long county car park, the lifeguard towers and the restrooms and snack bars that turn a beach into a day out. It is not the prettiest beach in Malibu. It is the one you can rely on.

That reliability is the point. Families spread out near the main towers, groups claim a patch for volleyball and a cooler, and there is enough sand that nobody is on top of anybody. The lifeguard service is among the best on the coast, which matters here because Zuma is genuinely the open ocean, with lively surf and rip currents that catch out visitors who expect a calm Mediterranean shore. This is a swimming coast for confident water users rather than a paddling pool, and the smart move is to set up near a staffed tower and stay between the flags.

The honest caveat is the water and the parking rather than the beach itself. The Pacific here is cool, often in the high teens to low twenties Celsius even at its late summer best, so a long swim wants a little resolve or a wetsuit. And the county lot, easy in the morning, fills by midday on warm weekends while the free roadside spaces vanish even earlier. Come early, budget for the lot, swim near a guard, and Zuma gives you the most dependable, spacious and well run beach day anywhere on the Malibu coast, capped by that long golden California sunset.

The club layer

Where to eat near Zuma

Zuma is a county beach with a seasonal snack bar rather than a beach club, which is honest and part of its charm. For a polished oceanfront table you drive east into central Malibu, where the celebrated rooms sit above the water. Hours, access and any minimum spend are set by each venue and to be confirmed.

Nobu Malibu

The most famous oceanfront table in Malibu, a celebrated Japanese restaurant on a deck over the water in central Malibu, a drive east of Zuma along the highway. It is a destination dinner rather than a beach club, the place for a special evening with the Pacific below the terrace, so book well ahead. Treat it as the polished end to a Zuma beach day rather than a walk from the sand.

Carbon Beach Club

The oceanfront restaurant of the Malibu Beach Inn on Carbon Beach in central Malibu, a refined terrace right over the sand for lunch, dinner and a sunset drink, again a drive east of Zuma. It is the closest thing the coast has to a polished beach club setting, attached to a hotel rather than open beach sand. Book ahead, and treat it as a destination on the way home rather than a Zuma walk in.

For something easier and closer to the sand, the seasonal snack bar at Zuma handles a beach day lunch, and the casual spots and markets along the highway in west Malibu are the local stop for supplies. The full directory gathers the oceanfront venues across the coast, each confirming its own hours, dress and minimum spend when you enquire.

Getting there and essentials

West Malibu, on the PCH

Zuma sits on the Pacific Coast Highway in the west of Malibu, about an hour from central Los Angeles depending on the traffic, which can be heavy on summer weekends. A car is the realistic way to reach it, as practical public transport along this coast is very limited.

The long Los Angeles County car park runs directly behind the sand and is signed off the highway, charging a daily fee. A handful of free roadside spaces sit along the highway but fill very early on warm days, so arrive near opening or budget for the lot. Do not block residential driveways, as enforcement is brisk.

Common questions about Zuma Beach

Is Zuma Beach good for swimming?

Yes, with care. Zuma is one of the most lifeguarded beaches in Malibu, with a broad gentle entry over clean sand, but it is the open Pacific, so the water is cool and the surf and rip currents are real. Swim near a staffed tower and under the flags, keep children close, and conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Is Zuma Beach free?

The sand is free and public, as on every California beach. What you pay for is parking, with a paid Los Angeles County lot running the length of the beach and limited free spaces along the Pacific Coast Highway that fill very early on warm days. Budget for the lot fee or arrive at opening to find a roadside space.

Does Zuma Beach have facilities?

Yes, it is one of the best equipped beaches on the coast, with lifeguard towers, restrooms, showers, a seasonal snack bar, volleyball courts and the large county car park right behind the sand. It is built for a full easy day, which is a big part of why families and groups choose Zuma over the prettier but bare pocket coves.

Is Zuma Beach better than Point Dume?

They suit different days. Zuma is wider, busier and far better equipped, the easy choice for space, facilities and a reliable family day. Point Dume next door is more scenic and sheltered, with cliffs, tide pools and a clifftop trail, but smaller and harder to park. Many visitors do both, swimming at Zuma and walking up to the Point Dume bluff.

How do you get to Zuma Beach?

Zuma sits on the Pacific Coast Highway in west Malibu, about an hour from central Los Angeles depending on traffic, and a car is the realistic way to reach it. The long county lot is signed directly off the highway, and there are limited free roadside spaces nearby. There is little practical public transport, so plan to drive and park.
