For a beach trip the calendar is simple at first glance, summer is the season, but the detail rewards a closer look, because the sea, the wind and the crowds each peak at slightly different moments and knowing them is the difference between a good week and a perfect one.
The key thing to grasp is that the sea lags the air. The Aegean is slow to warm, sitting around a cool 17 degrees Celsius through winter and only climbing past a comfortable 20 from late May, before peaking near 25 degrees in August and staying pleasantly warm through September and into early October. So while May can deliver hot afternoons, the water is still bracing, and the warmest swimming actually arrives after the longest days have passed.
The other local character is the meltemi, the dry northerly wind that blows across the Aegean in high summer. On Kos it is gentler than on the central islands, but it still cools the air on hot days and roughens the long, exposed north coast beaches such as Tigaki and Mastichari, which is a joy for windsurfers and a nuisance for sunbathers. The answer is simple, on breezy days move to a sheltered south or east facing bay near Kefalos and the swimming stays calm.

When each month earns its place
May. The island wakes up. Hillsides are green, wildflowers are out and the days are warm and bright, but the sea is still on the cool side at around 19 degrees, so this is a month for cyclists, walkers and early sunbathers more than dedicated swimmers. Prices are low and the beaches are quiet, which makes late May a lovely time if a slightly fresh dip does not put you off.
June. For many regulars this is the pick of the year. The sun is dependable, the heat is strong but not yet punishing, the sea has warmed to a swimmable 23 degrees and the worst of the August crush is weeks away. The long north coast beaches feel spacious, the south coast coves are glorious, and the whole island is open and running smoothly. Warm water, sun and space rarely line up this well.
July and August. High summer, hot, dry and at full tilt. The water is at its warmest, the days are long and every beach business is open, but this is also peak season for crowds and prices, and the meltemi blows hardest now across the exposed north coast. August in particular fills with families on school holidays. Come for the guaranteed heat and buzz, book early, and keep a sheltered southern bay in reserve for windy afternoons.
September. The other star month. The sea is at or near its warmest after a summer of heating, the fierce edge has gone from the heat, and the family crowds thin once the schools go back. Prices begin to ease while the island is still lively and fully open. For warm swimming, comfortable days and breathing room all at once, September is hard to better.
October. A gentle, attractive month as the season winds down. The sea stays swimmable in the low twenties for the first half, the air is mild and pleasant, and the beaches are calm and quiet. Some rain returns and businesses begin to close toward month end, so it is a fine choice for a relaxed, off peak beach and sightseeing trip rather than guaranteed all day sun.
November to April. The off season. Kos is mild rather than cold, but it is also frequently wet, the sea is too cool for most swimmers and many beach tavernas and hotels shut for the winter. The island is at its quietest and cheapest, which suits travellers drawn to the ancient sites, the harbour town and the empty landscapes, but it is not the time for a sun and sand holiday.

How warm is the sea in Kos?
