Calm water on Koh Chang is mostly a question of where on the west coast you stand and, just as much, when in the year you visit. The island faces the sea down its long western side, sheltered enough in the dry season to give a string of gentle, easy swims, but open enough that the same beaches turn rough when the southwest monsoon arrives. So the honest first answer is that the calmest water is the calm season, roughly November to April, and that any ranking of beaches assumes you are swimming then rather than in the green months when the warning flags go up.

Within that calm season, we have ranked the beaches on how sheltered and settled the water tends to be, how gently the shore shelves, how clear the sea reads, and how free of the currents and river mouths that can spoil an easy swim. The long central sweeps win for space and shelter, the shallow northern bay wins for a gentle paddle, and the more exposed and remote shores fall down the list. Match the beach to the season and the day, watch the sea before you go in, and Koh Chang gives a fine, settled swim.

The ranking

Calmest swimming beaches in Koh Chang

Scored on shelter, how gently the shore shelves, clarity and freedom from currents, in the dry season. The honest note on rougher shores is below.

1
Central west coast

Klong Prao

The best balance of calm and space on the island, a long sheltered sweep between two river mouths with room to find a settled patch away from the crowds and a gentle shore in the dry season. Stay between the river mouths, which can carry a current where the fresh water meets the sea, and you have the most reliable easy swim on Koh Chang, with food and resorts still within reach.

2
North west coast

White Sand Beach

The easiest serviced calm swim, a long gentle strip that shelves kindly and stays settled through the dry season, with sunbeds, food and watersports along the sand. It is the liveliest and busiest beach, so it is convenience rather than peace, but for a simple gentle swim with everything to hand and a famous sunset to follow it is hard to beat.

Far north, near the ferry

Klong Son

The most sheltered water of all, a shallow northern bay just off the ferry that stays calm on settled days, the gentlest paddle on the island. The catch is the shallowness, since it drains a long way at low tide and is more a wade than a proper swim, but for the smallest swimmers and the calmest possible water close to the boat it is the kindest corner of Koh Chang.

4
Central west coast

Kai Bae

Pretty and partly sheltered by the islets offshore, with a calm, easy feel on a settled dry season day and the best sunset on the island. The sand narrows and turns rocky in patches at low tide, so the swimming window shifts with the water and it is less of a clean calm swim than Klong Prao, but the islets and the easy scene make it a fine settled spot at the right hour.

The honest read

Where the water turns

The honest thing about calm water on Koh Chang is that it belongs to the dry season, and that even the gentle beaches can change in a day. The central west coast at Klong Prao and White Sand Beach gives the most reliable settled swim, and the shallow bay at Klong Son the gentlest paddle, but all of them assume you are there from roughly November to April and that you read the sea before you wade in. In the green season the same shores can turn rough with wind, swell and current, and the warning flags that go up are worth taking seriously.

Some shores are simply less calm and worth knowing about. Lonely Beach has a reputation for a strong undertow and is best treated with real caution, especially out of season. Long Beach at the southeast tip is remote and more exposed, and Bang Bao is a working harbour rather than a swimming beach at all. There is no reliable public lifeguard on most of the island, so swim where others are swimming, keep within your depth, mind the river mouths at Klong Prao, heed any red flags, and remember we describe typical conditions only with no swimming safety guaranteed.

The club layer

Where to book a daybed

All Koh Chang beach clubs

Koh Chang does not run a deck of gated beach clubs the way some islands do, and the calm water shore is mostly open public beach with loungers, food and watersports run through the resorts that front the sand, busiest along White Sand Beach and Klong Prao. A serviced calm day is simple enough, a hired sunbed and umbrella with restaurants close at hand, while the quieter ends and the shallow northern bay have few facilities, so you carry your own water, food and shade.

Sunbed rates and any hotel day use change by operator and by season, so tell us your dates, party size and whether you want the easy serviced sand or a quieter, calmer patch, and we will pass your enquiry to a beachfront that suits so they can confirm availability and any charge. See our Koh Chang beach clubs guide for the full picture of who runs which front.

Good questions

Before you go

Which Koh Chang beach has the calmest water for swimming?

In the dry season the long sheltered sweep at Klong Prao is the most reliable calm swim, with space to find a settled patch away from the river mouths. The shallow northern bay at Klong Son is calmer still but very shallow, more a paddle than a swim, and White Sand Beach is gentle and easy when the season is settled. Conditions change with the season and are typical and never guaranteed.

Is the sea calm at Koh Chang?

The west coast is usually calm and gentle in the dry season from November to April, which is when the swimming is at its best. In the green season from May to October the same beaches can turn rough with wind, swell and currents, and warning flags go up. There is no reliable public lifeguard on most beaches, so check conditions on the day and treat the sea as your own responsibility.

Are there currents or undertow on Koh Chang beaches?

Yes, in the green season and after storms the west coast can develop currents and undertow, and Lonely Beach in particular has a reputation for a strong pull. The river mouths at Klong Prao can also carry a current where the fresh water meets the sea. Heed any red flags or warning signs, swim where others are swimming, keep within your depth, and remember no swimming safety is guaranteed.

Which Koh Chang beaches are not good for a calm swim?

Lonely Beach can be rough with a known undertow and is best treated with caution, Long Beach at the southeast tip is remote and exposed, and Bang Bao is a working harbour rather than a swimming beach. For a calm swim stay on the sheltered central west coast at Klong Prao, White Sand Beach or the shallow northern bay at Klong Son, and go in the dry season.

When is the sea calmest on Koh Chang?

The calmest, clearest sea runs through the dry season from about November to April, with the most settled water often in the cooler early months. The green season from May to October brings the southwest monsoon, heavier rain and a rougher, greener sea. See our Koh Chang when to go guide for the month by month detail before you plan a swimming trip.

Is Klong Prao good for swimming?

It is the best balance of calm and space on the island, a long sheltered sweep with room to find a settled patch, gentle in the dry season and quieter than the strip. Mind the two river mouths, which can carry a current, and stay between them for the easiest swim. As always conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so judge the sea on the day.
