The verdict

  • Best for: Travellers who want Negril's soft sand and calm water with fewer vendors and crowds than Seven Mile Beach, often as resort guests.
  • Best spot: The calm clear shallows along the crescent for easy swimming, with a public access point giving a quieter stretch away from the resorts.
  • Know this: Most of the bay is fronted by resorts, so public access is limited to a few points; the sand below the high water line stays public.

The honest read

Bloody Bay is the calmer sibling of Negril's famous strip. Curving north beyond Seven Mile Beach, it shares the same soft white sand and gentle clear water but with a quieter, more sheltered feel and fewer of the vendors and crowds that work the main beach. Despite the dramatic name, which traces to the area's old whaling history, this is one of the gentlest, most relaxed swims in Negril, which is why a cluster of resorts chose to line it.

The honest framing is about access. Most of the bay frontage belongs to resorts, several of them all inclusive, so the easy loungers and bars are for their guests, and independent visitors rely on a few public access points to reach the sand. Jamaican law keeps the beach below the high water line public, so you can walk and swim, but you will find fewer facilities here than on Seven Mile Beach and should bring what you need. It is calm and pretty rather than buzzing.

It suits resort guests and travellers who want soft sand and calm water without the hustle of the main strip. If you want the long social ribbon of bars, watersports and sunset crowds, Seven Mile Beach is right next door and delivers exactly that. For a free local beach with shade and food away from the resorts, Bluefields down the coast is the honest alternative, and Doctor's Cave Beach in Montego Bay is the managed benchmark.

Clubs on this beach

Bloody Bay is fronted mainly by resorts rather than open beach clubs. Here is the honest layout and where to book a managed day.

1

Resort beachfronts

Much of Bloody Bay is lined by resorts, several all inclusive, whose loungers, bars and watersports are reserved for guests. Some properties offer day passes that include beach access and facilities, which is the usual way to enjoy the serviced part of the bay without staying over. Day pass availability, inclusions and prices vary by resort and are to be confirmed, so check directly before planning around one.

Negril club days nearby

For open beach clubs with watersports and a livelier scene, Seven Mile Beach just to the south is the heart of Negril's day club action. We map the organised options across the resort in the Jamaica beach clubs directory. Access terms, hours and any minimum spend there are to be confirmed, so confirm directly before you choose between the bays.

Getting there and essentials

Bloody Bay is at the northern end of Negril in Westmoreland, just beyond Seven Mile Beach, roughly fifteen minutes from Negril town and around an hour and a quarter from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. Most visitors arrive as resort guests or drive and taxi in, using the public access points to reach the sand if they are not staying on the bay.

Because public facilities are limited, bring water, shade and anything you need for the day, and use the public beach below the high water line. Any lifeguard cover is tied to the resorts, so on the public sand judge the calm water yourself and supervise children. Treat the gentle conditions as typical rather than guaranteed, and if you want serviced loungers, ask resorts about a day pass before you travel.

Common questions

Why is it called Bloody Bay?

The name traces to the area's old whaling history, when whales were processed in the bay, rather than to anything alarming today. Modern Bloody Bay is in fact one of the calmest and prettiest swims in Negril, with soft white sand and gentle clear water, which is why several resorts chose to line it.

Is Bloody Bay public or private?

Under Jamaican law the beach below the high water line is public, so you can walk and swim along Bloody Bay. However, most of the frontage is occupied by resorts, so independent visitors reach the sand through a few public access points and will find fewer facilities than on Seven Mile Beach.

Is Bloody Bay calmer than Seven Mile Beach?

Generally yes. Bloody Bay is more sheltered and quieter, with fewer vendors and crowds, while Seven Mile Beach just to the south is the long, lively social strip with bars, watersports and sunset crowds. Choose Bloody Bay for calm and Seven Mile Beach for buzz; they sit side by side.

Can you visit Bloody Bay without staying at a resort?

Yes. You can reach the public sand through the access points and swim in the bay, though you should bring water and shade, as public facilities are limited. Some resorts sell day passes that include beach access and facilities, with inclusions and prices that vary and are to be confirmed.

When is the best time to visit Bloody Bay?

The dry season from December to April brings the most reliable sun and calmest sea, and the bay stays quieter than Seven Mile Beach through the year. Mornings are calm and uncrowded, and the western Negril coast is famous for its sunsets, so a late afternoon visit rewards you too.
