Kamenjak is the cape where Istria runs out of road and turns wild. A protected nature park at the southern tip beyond Premantura, it is a low headland of white rock, juniper and pine laced with dirt tracks that lead to one hidden cove after another, the Adriatic glowing clear and green against the stone. There is no resort, no boardwalk and no parade of loungers, just the land, the sea and whichever inlet you choose to make your own for the afternoon. For a couple who find romance in space and silence rather than service, Kamenjak is the most quietly thrilling shore in the region, a place to disappear together for a day.
The way to love it is to keep going. The first coves past the entrance fill quickest, so drive a little deeper into the park, leave the car and walk a few minutes over the rock, and the reward is a private terrace of warm stone above water so clear you can count the pebbles on the bottom. Slip in for a swim, dry off in the sun, share a picnic with nobody in sight, and the day takes on the slow rhythm that the polished beaches near the towns can never quite give you. Snorkelling here is a pleasure, the light plays through the shallows, and the late afternoon over the cape is as soft and golden a setting for two as Istria offers.
The honest catch is that wild means wild. There is little shade, no shop at your cove and no lifeguard, the tracks are rough on a low car and the water is often deep right off the rock, so this is a day you plan and carry. The well known cliff jumping spots and the nearer inlets draw a younger crowd and a buzz in peak August, which is the opposite of the solitude most people come for, so the trick is always to go early and go further. If you want a cocktail brought to your lounger this is not your beach, and Mulini in Rovinj or the Verudela clubs will serve you better, but for a barefoot adventure and a cove of your own, nothing on this coast comes close.
No clubs, by design
Kamenjak is a protected park, so there is no beach club on the rock and that is the whole point. We name only real venues and never invent one to fill a gap.
The reserve keeps development out, so do not come expecting loungers, daybeds or a minimum spend at your cove. There is a long established rustic forest bar deep in the park for a cold drink between swims, simple and in keeping with the wild setting, and its details and any prices are to be confirmed on the day. Premantura, Cape Kamenjak
Kamenjak lies beyond the village of Premantura at the southern tip of Istria, a short drive south of Pula. You enter the protected park on unpaved tracks, pay any seasonal vehicle fee at the gate and then drive or cycle to the cove that calls you. A car turns the scattered inlets into an easy day, while cycling is a lovely slower way to explore.
There are no shops at the coves and the tracks can be rough on a low car, so go gently and bring everything you need. Water, food, shade and water shoes make the difference between a hard day and a blissful one, and the further you drive from the entrance the quieter your swim.
