The verdict

  • Best for: Couples and evening people who want the marina, a waterfront stroll, dinner by the yachts and the boats to the islands, rather than a day flat out on the sand, which Sakkala does not really offer.
  • Best spot: The marina promenade at sunset, kept for a slow walk past the lit Mediterranean style buildings and a dinner by the water, with an early boat from here to the Giftun islands for the actual swimming.
  • Know this: Sakkala is the central marina district, mostly city coastline and older hotels with limited public sand, so come for the evening and the boats and head to the resort bays or island beaches for a proper swim.

Sand
Limited, city front
Sakkala is the marina and city centre of Hurghada rather than a beach district, so the sand is limited, mostly tucked in front of older hotels with only a few public stretches along the city coastline. There is the odd patch to sit on, but nobody comes here for a long roomy beach, and you feel the town and the harbour rather than open shore, which is the honest shape of the place.
Water
Calm, marina sheltered
The water around the marina is calm and sheltered, fine for a dip from a hotel beach but framed by the harbour, the moorings and the boat traffic rather than open reef. It is pleasant rather than pristine, the city sea rather than the island turquoise, and the real clear water of the trip is a short boat ride away off the Giftun islands. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Entry
Hotel beach or boat
There is no great free public entry to speak of in Sakkala, so getting in the sea usually means a hotel beach or a day pass, or stepping onto a boat at the marina. That makes Sakkala a place you launch from rather than swim at, easy for a cruise or a snorkel trip and awkward for a casual turn up and swim. Any hotel day pass charges are to be confirmed.
Facilities
Marina, dining, boats, nightlife
This is where Sakkala excels. The marina is lined with restaurants, cafes, shops and dive and boat operators, with the fishermen's village beside it and the nightlife of the city close by, and the promenade is made for an evening stroll. It is one of the liveliest, most social corners of Hurghada, so the facilities are about dining, shopping and sailing rather than sunbeds and showers on a beach.
Lifeguard
Seasonal, not guaranteed
Any lifeguard cover is seasonal and tied to the hotel beaches, and not guaranteed, and the marina is a working harbour with boat traffic rather than a patrolled swimming beach. If you swim from a hotel here, judge conditions for yourself, watch for boats, supervise children closely, and remember the strong year round sun. We make no swimming safety promise anywhere in Hurghada.
Best months
November to April
Hurghada is a winter sun star, so the cooler months are the most comfortable, with October, November, March and May the best value shoulder weeks. Sakkala is at its best in the late afternoon and evening when the marina comes alive and the waterfront fills for the sunset and dinner. The island boats leave in the morning, so an early start suits a Giftun day trip from here.
The honest read

If you came to Sakkala expecting a beach, we have to be straight with you, because this is the wrong place for one. Sakkala is the central marina district of Hurghada, the lively, social, dressed up heart of the city, and its coastline is mostly harbour, marina and older hotels with only thin scraps of public sand. The swimming, when there is any, is from a hotel beach in calm but city framed water, and the open turquoise that draws people to this coast is not here. So as a beach, judged honestly, Sakkala is a miss, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a disappointment.

Judged as what it actually is, though, Sakkala is one of the best evenings in Hurghada. The marina is genuinely lovely after dark, a promenade of colourful Mediterranean style buildings lit against the water, lined with restaurants and cafes and the masts of moored boats, with live music drifting out and the buzz of a city enjoying itself. For a couple this is the romantic side of Hurghada, a slow walk hand in hand past the yachts as the sun drops, a long dinner by the water and the easy option of a sunset sailing trip to round it off. That is a different pleasure from a beach, and on its own terms it is a real one.

So treat Sakkala as a base and an evening rather than a beach day, and it earns its keep. It is the main place the island boats leave from, so it is the natural launch pad for a day trip to the Giftun beaches at Paradise Island, Orange Bay or Mahmya, where the real swimming and snorkelling are. Spend your beach hours out there or at the calm resort bays of Makadi Bay and Sahl Hasheesh, then come back to Sakkala for the marina at dusk and dinner by the water. Do that and you use the city the way it works best, sand by day somewhere else, Sakkala for the night.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Sakkala is marina, hotel beaches and boat operators rather than standalone beach clubs, with the swimming on hotel day passes and the islands a short sail away. We describe the options honestly and route enquiries through our directory, never inventing fees or amenities.

The swimming around Sakkala runs on hotel beaches and day passes rather than a standalone club, while the marina itself is for dining, strolling and stepping onto the island boats. Verdict: the social and romantic evening heart of Hurghada and the main launch pad for the Giftun day trips, best used as a base and a night out with the beach day taken at the islands or the resort bays, with day pass charges to be confirmed.

Getting there and essentials

Sakkala sits in the centre of Hurghada, the marina and downtown district between the old town of Dahar to the north and the resort strip to the south, so it is easy to reach by taxi or microbus from anywhere along the coast and walkable once you are there. The marina, with its promenade of restaurants and the moorings for the island boats, is the focus, and Hurghada Marina is where many of the day trips and snorkelling cruises depart. Most resort visitors come in for an evening or to catch a boat rather than to stay, while the central hotels put you in the middle of the action.

Come to Sakkala in the late afternoon and evening when the marina is at its best, carry small cash for dinner, tips and any boat fee, and book your island day trip the day before so you can take an early boat from here to the Giftun beaches for the real swimming. If you want to swim near Sakkala in the day, use a hotel beach or hop to the public beach at Old Vic, and keep the calm resort bays at Makadi Bay and Sahl Hasheesh and the island sandbanks for the proper beach days. Sakkala is the night and the launch pad of a good Hurghada week, not the sand.

Common questions

Is there a good beach in Sakkala, Hurghada?

Honestly, not really for swimming. Sakkala is the central marina district of Hurghada, mostly city coastline with the marina, older hotels and a few limited public stretches, so the beach itself is not the reason to come. It shines for the marina, the dining, the boats and the evenings rather than a day on the sand, and for a proper swim you are better at the resort bays or the island beaches. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

What is Sakkala in Hurghada known for?

Sakkala is the lively heart of Hurghada, best known for the marina with its colourful Mediterranean style buildings, the waterfront promenade lined with restaurants and shops, the nightlife, and the traditional fishermen's village beside it. It is also the main departure point for the island boats and snorkelling trips. People come to Sakkala to stroll, dine and sail rather than to lie on a beach, and the marina is the star.

Is Sakkala good for couples?

Yes, in the evening rather than on the sand. The marina at Sakkala is one of the most romantic settings in Hurghada after dark, a waterfront stroll past the yachts and the lit buildings, a dinner by the water and the occasional live music, with a sunset sailing trip an easy add on. For an actual beach day together you would book a hotel beach or a boat to the islands, but for a romantic evening Sakkala is the place.

Can you take a boat trip from Sakkala?

Yes, it is the main hub for them. Hurghada Marina in Sakkala is where many of the island and snorkelling boats depart, including the day trips to the Giftun islands at Paradise Island, Orange Bay and Mahmya, along with diving trips and sunset cruises. It makes Sakkala a natural base for getting onto the water even though its own beach is limited. Operators, timings and prices vary and are to be confirmed.

Where should I swim if I am staying in Sakkala?

For a proper swim from Sakkala, take a short hop to a hotel beach or a public beach such as Old Vic, or better still a boat day to the Giftun island beaches at Paradise Island, Orange Bay or Mahmya, and the calm resort bays at Makadi Bay and Sahl Hasheesh for soft sand and house reefs. Sakkala itself is for the marina and the evening, not the beach day. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

When is the best time to visit Sakkala?

Hurghada is a winter sun escape, so November to April gives warm comfortable days, with October, November, March and May the best value shoulder weeks. Sakkala is at its best in the late afternoon and evening when the marina comes alive, the heat eases and the waterfront fills for the sunset and dinner. The boats leave in the morning, so an early start suits a Giftun island day trip from here.
