Playa Hermosa
The easiest family swim in the north, a calm sheltered crescent near Coco with gentle entry water and a line of open air restaurants right on the sand. You can wade, then walk ten steps to lunch, which is exactly what a day with young children needs.
Playa Danta
A small, gentle cove with small forgiving waves for swimming and boogie boarding, backed by the car free town of Las Catalinas. Leave the car in the day lot, walk in, and the beachfront tables and plaza cafes are a couple of minutes from the towel.
Playa Conchal
The clearest, calmest swimming in Guanacaste, a sheltered crescent of crushed shell that older children love for snorkelling. The catch is the walk in from Brasilito and the lack of shade, so come early, bring an umbrella, and lunch back in the village sodas.
Playa Flamingo
A clean curve of white sand with calm protected swimming and a smart marina town behind it, so facilities, ice cream and the catch of the day are all close. Easy and comfortable, and a good base if you want a little more polish than a fishing village.
Playa Tamarindo
The liveliest choice, with a gentle beach break that suits a first surf lesson for older children and the widest spread of food and shops in the region. It is busy and you must mind the river mouth at the north end, so it suits active families over toddlers.
Which beach for which family
For the youngest children, keep it simple and stay with the sheltered bays. Playa Hermosa and Playa Danta give you the gentlest water, the shortest walk to a table and the least to worry about, while Playa Conchal rewards an early start with the clearest water for snorkelling once children are confident swimmers. Flamingo sits comfortably between them, calm and well served, with the marina catch a short stroll away.
Be honest about the wild beaches. Playa Grande, Playa Avellanas and the Nosara surf strand at Guiones are some of the loveliest sand in Costa Rica, but the waves and currents make them places for a surf school or a walk, not a paddle with toddlers. Save the legendary beach lunch at Lola's on Avellanas for a day when the children are watching the surfers, not swimming, and plan the dry season from December to April for the calmest, sunniest family days.
