Rainbow Bay Beach
Best for. Families and beginner surfers who want a sheltered corner of the famous Superbank.
Best spot. The protected northern corner under Greenmount headland, where the water stays calmest.
Know this. The bay sits on the Superbank, so it can get busy with surfers, but the swimming corner stays gentle.
Rainbow Bay is the quiet little sibling of the famous southern surf spots. It tucks between Greenmount headland and Snapper Rocks, a short curve of sand that stays sheltered while the legendary waves roll past just beyond it.
That shelter is the whole point. The northern corner under the headland is protected and gentle, which makes Rainbow Bay one of the calmer places to swim at the southern end of the coast and a comfortable family choice.
It is also part of the Superbank, the long sand bank that produces some of the best waves in the world at Snapper Rocks. So you get the rare mix of a famous surf setting and a sheltered family corner in the same small bay.
Because of the Superbank, the water can be busy with surfers, and the swell builds quickly out past the protected corner. Keep to the sheltered northern end and the patrol flags for the calmest, safest swimming.
Who might want more space. On a big swell or a peak weekend the bay gets crowded, so families wanting room can spread out at nearby Coolangatta, while experienced surfers head for Snapper itself.
Clubs on this beach
Rainbow Bay is a small public patrolled cove with no daybed club on the sand, so we route you to the Gold Coast beaches and venues where a club style day exists.

Far southern Gold Coast, Queensland
Rainbow Bay sits at the far southern Gold Coast between Coolangatta and Snapper Rocks, a few minutes from Gold Coast Airport.
Parking is limited around the small bay and fills at peak times, but it is an easy walk from Coolangatta and around the rocks to Snapper.
Facilities are good, with a surf club, showers and cafes a short walk away. Swim in the sheltered corner between the flags.
