The verdict

Best for. Travellers who want a calm relaxed beach by a working fishing harbour, fresh fish tavernas, and the launch point for Akamas and Blue Lagoon boat trips.

Best spot. The sand and pebble stretches either side of the harbour, with the eastern side often calmer for a relaxed swim.

Know this. The shore is pebble and coarse sand rather than soft powder, so water shoes help. The real draw is the harbour, the tavernas and the boat trips.

The honest read

Latchi, also written Latsi, is the relaxed coastal village just west of Polis at the foot of the Akamas peninsula, and its beach is wrapped around a small working fishing harbour. That harbour is the heart of the place. Fishing boats and pleasure craft come and go, fresh fish tavernas line the front, and from here the boats set out along the wild Akamas coast to the famous Blue Lagoon. As a result Latchi feels more like a genuine seaside village than a built up resort, which is much of its charm.

The beach itself is an easy, calm one. The shore is a mix of coarse sand and pebble either side of the harbour, the water is clear and generally calm in the sheltered bay, and the eastern stretches in particular make for a gentle relaxed swim. The clarity that the whole Akamas coast is known for shows here too, which makes it a pleasant spot for snorkelling close to shore, and sunbeds and tavernas keep the practical side easy on the busier stretches near the village.

The honest read is the surface and the priorities. This is not a soft powder sand beach, so for comfort underfoot water shoes are worth packing, and if your single goal is a long flop on velvet sand the bigger resort beaches will suit you better. The real draw of Latchi is the combination of a working harbour, excellent fresh fish, calm clear water and the boat trips along the Akamas, rather than the texture of the sand itself.

Who should skip it. If you want lively nightlife and a buzzing strip, the Ayia Napa and Larnaca beaches are far more your scene. But for a calm, characterful village beach with a fishing harbour, fresh seafood and the gateway to the wild Akamas and the Blue Lagoon on your doorstep, Latchi is one of the most rewarding bases on the quiet northwest coast.

The club layer

A harbour village, not a club

Latchi is a relaxed public harbour beach with sunbed hire and fish tavernas rather than a single beach club. For a daybed and cabana scene, compare the Cyprus beach clubs guide and keep Latchi for the harbour, the seafood and the Akamas boat trips.

Polis and the Akamas, northwest coast

Latchi sits just west of Polis on the quiet northwest coast at the foot of the Akamas peninsula, around forty five minutes by car north of Paphos.

There is parking near the harbour front and the resorts along the bay, and a car is the easiest way to reach this corner of the island, since it sits away from the main resort towns.

The harbour has fish tavernas, cafes and boat trip operators, with sunbed hire on the busier stretches, but bring water shoes for the pebble and coarse sand and sun cover for the open shore.
