Crete has a long beach season, but the best window is narrower than the brochures suggest. The island is hot and dry from late spring to early autumn, yet the sea takes its time to warm and the crowds and prices spike hard in July and August. The reward for timing it right is warm water, comfortable heat and room on the sand.
The single most useful thing to understand is the lag between air and sea. Crete is already hot in May, but the water is still cool, while September keeps the warmth of a whole summer in the sea even as the air eases and the crowds thin. That is why the shoulder months so often beat the peak for a swimming holiday.
Below is the month by month picture, with the honest verdict on each. We have flagged the wind, since the meltemi can blow through the summer and matters more on some coasts than others, and we have been clear about which months are for swimming and which are really for walking and quiet.
Month by month at a glance
| Month | Air | Sea | Rain | Crowd | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Cool, around 15C by day | Cold, near 16C | Wettest month | Very quiet | Walking and towns, not the beach |
| February | Cool, around 15C | Coldest, near 15C | Wet | Very quiet | Low season, off season prices |
| March | Mild, around 17C | Cool, near 16C | Showery | Quiet | Wildflowers and hiking weather |
| April | Pleasant, around 20C | Cool, near 17C | Occasional showers | Building slowly | Warm enough to sunbathe, cool to swim |
| May | Warm, around 24C | Mild, near 19C | Mostly dry | Pleasant | Lovely on land, the sea is still bracing |
| June | Hot, around 28C | Warm, near 22C | Dry | Busy but bearable | One of the best months overall |
| July | Very hot, around 31C | Warm, near 24C | Dry | Peak and crowded | Hot, busy, windy on exposed coasts |
| August | Hottest, around 31C | Warmest, near 25C | Dry | Peak and packed | Warm water, but the biggest crowds |
| September | Hot, around 28C | Warmest, near 24C | Mostly dry | Easing | The sweet spot for swimming |
| October | Warm, around 24C | Mild, near 22C | Showers return | Quiet again | Warm sea, soft light, fewer people |
| November | Mild, around 20C | Cooling, near 20C | Wet | Very quiet | Season winding down |
| December | Cool, around 16C | Cooling, near 18C | Wet | Very quiet | Towns and tavernas, not the sand |
When each month earns its place
May. May is the month land lovers adore and swimmers find frustrating. The island is green, warm and uncrowded, the wildflowers are out and the heat is comfortable, but the sea is still around nineteen degrees and feels properly cool when you wade in. Come now for hiking, gorges and quiet beaches, and accept that swims will be short and bracing rather than long and lazy.
June. June is arguably the best all round month on Crete. The water has warmed to a pleasant temperature, the days are hot and reliably dry, and the worst of the peak crowds have not yet landed. The exposed western and northern beaches can already feel the summer wind, but for most people June delivers the full beach experience with more room than July and August.
July. July brings the full force of summer, with hot dry days, the warmest stretch of the year on the way and the crowds and prices climbing fast. It is also when the meltemi wind is most likely, which can churn up the exposed northwest and west coasts while leaving the sheltered south calmer. A great month if you book ahead and pick your beach to suit the wind.
August. August is the hottest and busiest month, when the sea is at its warmest and so is the demand for every sunbed. The water is gorgeous and the heat is serious, but the popular beaches are at their fullest and the wind can still blow on the exposed coasts. Worth it for the warm sea if you can handle crowds, book early and start your beach days at sunrise.
September. September is the connoisseur choice. The sea is still carrying the warmth of the whole summer, often the warmest swimming of the year, while the air eases off the August peak and the crowds noticeably thin once the school holidays end. The light softens, prices dip and the beaches breathe again. For a swimming holiday, it is hard to beat.
October. October is a gentle, underrated month. The sea stays mild and swimmable for the first half, the light turns golden and the crowds have largely gone home, though the first autumn showers begin to return. It is the last comfortable beach window of the year, ideal for a quiet trip that mixes warm swims with walking and long lunches.

Before you go
What is the best month to go to Crete for the beach?
June and September are the standout months. Both give you warm water and hot days with lighter crowds than July and August. September often has the warmest sea of the year, since the water holds the summer heat, which makes it the top pick for a swimming holiday.
When is the sea warmest in Crete?
Late August and September bring the warmest water, typically around twenty four to twenty five degrees, because the sea lags the air and keeps building heat through the summer. May and early June feel notably cooler for swimming even though the air is already hot, so time a swimming trip for the later season.
Is Crete too windy in summer?
The meltemi wind can blow through July and August, and it matters most on the exposed northwest and west coasts, which can turn choppy. The south coast is usually more sheltered. Pick your beach to suit the wind on the day, and the wind becomes a minor issue rather than a holiday spoiler.
When is the cheapest time to visit Crete?
The low season from November to March is cheapest, but it is not beach weather. For value with a usable beach, look at late April, May and October, the shoulders of the season, when prices are lower than peak and the island is quieter, even if some swims are on the cool side.
Can you swim in Crete in May or October?
You can, with caveats. In May the sea is around nineteen degrees, which is swimmable but bracing, so swims tend to be short. In October the water is still mild, near twenty two degrees early in the month, and more comfortable for a proper swim before the autumn cooldown sets in.
