When to go to the Costa del Sol for the beach

Month by month on air, sea, rain and crowds, with the honest read on the best weeks for swimming.

The verdict

  • Best forTravellers choosing the right weeks for warm sea, comfortable heat and lighter crowds
  • Top pickJune and September for warm water, strong sun and far more space than the August peak
  • One thing to knowThis is one of the mildest coasts in Europe, with a long season, but the sea is only properly warm from July to October

Published 4 March 2026. Last reviewed 27 May 2026

The Costa del Sol earns its name, with more sunshine than almost anywhere else in Europe and a famously mild climate that stretches the beach season at both ends. Winters are gentle rather than cold, springs and autumns are warm, and summers are hot and reliably dry. That long, kind season is the coast's great advantage, but the sea still follows its own slower clock, warming up later than the air and holding that warmth deep into autumn.

The honest sweet spots are the edges of summer. June brings hot, settled days, a sea that has warmed to a comfortable swim and lighter crowds before the school holidays, while September keeps the water at its warmest as the fierce heat eases and the resorts quieten. July and August are hot, busy and pricey, with the warmest sea but the least space and the strongest sun. The mild winter is pleasant for a break but too cool for most to swim.

Use the grid and notes below to choose your week. For the warmest swimming, aim for July to early October when the sea is at its best. For the finest balance of warm water, bearable heat and room on the sand, June and September are the picks, and they are kinder on the wallet too. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so read the temperatures as a guide rather than a promise.

The notable months

When each month earns its place

June. One of the best all round months on the coast. The days are hot and settled, the sea has warmed to a comfortable swim and the worst of the summer crowds and prices have not yet arrived, so the beaches still have room. Long daylight and warm evenings make it ideal for pairing beach days with the white towns inland before the July and August rush.

August. The peak in every sense. The sea is at its warmest, the sun is at its fiercest and the coast is full, with the highest prices and the busiest beaches of the year. It is a fine time to swim if you accept the crowds and book ahead, but the popular town beaches fill early, so arrive in the morning and save the hot afternoon for shade, a long lunch and a chiringuito.

September. Many regulars call it the best month, and with reason. The sea holds the summer's warmth, the fierce August heat eases into something more comfortable, and the crowds begin to thin as the holidays end. Rain stays low early in the month and the light softens, which makes it the pick for travellers who want warm water without the peak intensity or prices.

October. A gentle wind down to the season. The sea stays pleasantly warm well into the month so swimming is still on, while the heat softens and the crowds fade. The autumn rains begin to return later in October and the weather grows a little less reliable, but for warm water, quiet beaches and lower prices it remains one of the most underrated months on the coast.

Good questions

Before you go

What is the best month to visit the Costa del Sol for the beach?

June and September are the best all round, pairing a warm sea with comfortable heat and far more space than the August peak, and lower prices too. July and August have the warmest water but the biggest crowds. For swimming specifically, the sea is at its kindest from July to early October because it holds the summer's warmth.

When is the sea warmest on the Costa del Sol?

The sea is warmest from late July through September, peaking around 25C in August, and stays pleasant into October. Because the water lags the air, spring can feel cool for swimming even on a hot day, while early autumn keeps the warmth long after the peak heat passes. Treat these temperatures as typical rather than guaranteed.

Is the Costa del Sol good to visit in winter?

Yes, for a mild, sunny break rather than a beach holiday. The Costa del Sol is one of the warmest winter coasts in Europe, pleasant for the promenade, golf and the white towns, but the sea drops to around 15C, which is too cold for most swimmers, and some beach facilities scale back. For swimming, aim for June to October.

Is August too crowded on the Costa del Sol?

August is the peak, when the coast is at its busiest, hottest and most expensive and the town beaches fill early. It is still enjoyable if you book ahead and start early, but if you can choose, June or September give you a similar sea with noticeably more space, gentler heat and a calmer feel across the resorts.

When is the cheapest time for a Costa del Sol beach trip?

The low season from November to March is cheapest, with mild, sunny days but a sea too cold to swim and some facilities reduced. For value with a swimmable sea, the shoulder weeks of May, June and late September bring lower prices than peak summer while still delivering warm, settled beach days and lighter crowds.
