About an hour south of Lisbon
Praia do Carvalhal sits on the Comporta coast in the Alentejo, roughly an hour south of Lisbon by car once you are over the bridge and down through the pine and rice country. The beach is reached by a boardwalk over the dunes from the car park behind, off the Carvalhal road near the village. There is little public transport out here, so a car is really the only practical way to arrive and to move between the beaches and restaurants.
The car park behind the dunes fills up on summer weekends, so come earlier in the day for both a space and the calmer morning wind. Once you are over the boardwalk the beach is wide and open, with a surf school and a couple of restaurants behind the sand but few facilities on it, so bring water, sun cover and a windbreak. The water is cool and the currents are real, lifeguards patrol only in the summer season, so swim between the flags and keep children close.
