Pirlanta lies at the far western tip of the Cesme peninsula, past the whitewashed lanes of Alacati, on a point where the Aegean funnels a steady breeze straight off the Greek island of Chios. Spot guides rate the wind here as consistent as the famous Alacati bay, only with a little swell in it, which is why the local kiters treat Pirlanta as the wave beach and leave the flat water lessons to the shallows down the coast. What you find on arrival is a long open sweep of pale sand, kite centres planted at either end, and very little else built behind them.

Our honest position, the same one we hold on the Cesme club directory, is that Pirlanta earns its place at the top of that list as the coast’s defining stretch of sand rather than as a beach club, because in the strict sense it is not one. If you are a couple driving out for a served lounger and a warm swim, read the next few lines before you commit the afternoon.

The wind is the whole story. It blows cross onshore and stays remarkably consistent, boosted as it accelerates down from Chios on the horizon, and in a strong blow the bay stands up a metre or so of swell that the kiters ride. Certified centres work each end of the sand, one paired with the cafe and showers on the eastern side, and a roped swimming zone appears in high summer that quietly shrinks the usable area, so a busy August afternoon feels tighter than the empty photos suggest.

The right hour for two is not the middle of the day. Midday belongs to the canopies, and unless you enjoy the drama of watching them it is a lot of grit in the breeze. The wind here is a thermal that eases as the light goes, so the tender window opens late, when the last kites come down and you walk the length of the sand with Chios going gold across the strait. Bring a windbreak for earlier or you will eat sand rather than admire the view.

Food and shelter are deliberately thin. The cafe by the eastern centre handles water, coffee and the basics, and beyond it the point is undeveloped, with no restaurant row and no waiter walking a tray to a lounger. Carry water and save dinner for Alacati, which does the long evening far better than a wind blown point ever could.

Where it falls short is exactly where a lounging couple would feel it. The water is genuinely cool near 16 degrees Celsius even in high summer, the breeze rarely lets a book stay open, and there is none of the served comfort of a club behind the sand. If that is the day you wanted, Paparazzi Beach Club and the sheltered Ilica coves do warm calm swimming and served beds far better than Pirlanta pretends to.

Strip away the boards and Pirlanta is a wild edge of the peninsula, a natural point with an uninterrupted view across the water to Chios and none of the resort build up you find on the sheltered bays nearer town. The swimming, when the wind allows and you accept the temperature, is over pale sand into shallow water, but this is a shore to be active on rather than to doze along. Pirlanta sits at the very tip of the peninsula, roughly twenty minutes by road from Alacati or Cesme town, and because there is no useful bus to the point a hire car or a taxi is the sensible way in, and the kite centres keep parking near the sand. Booking, such as it is, works one way only: you reserve a lesson or a board and kite directly with a centre, while the beach asks nothing of you but the drive out and a windbreak.
