Seven Mile Beach is the beach that put Grand Cayman on the map, and for once the hype mostly holds. A long, continuous ribbon of powdery white coral sand runs down the sheltered west coast, lapped by calm, clear, pale turquoise water that is about as easy to swim in as the Caribbean gets. It is regularly ranked among the finest beaches in the region, and on a bright morning with the sand squeaking underfoot it is easy to see why.
Start with the honest footnote in the name. It is not seven miles, it is closer to six, a stretch that began life as a tourism flourish and stuck. That takes nothing away from the sand, which is genuinely superb, but it sets the tone for reading this beach clearly rather than taking the brochure at its word. The water is the real star, flat and clear on the leeward coast, gently shelving and reliable for swimming day after day.
The catch is the crowd and the concrete. The central stretch is the heart of the resort strip, lined with hotels, condos, bars and water sports, and at its busiest it can feel more like a built up beach club zone than a wild shore. That is fine if you want everything to hand, but if you came for space, the central strip is not where to find it. The beach is at its best where it thins out.
Head to the northern reaches around Cemetery Beach and Governors Beach for the same powdery sand with far more room, easy public parking and, at Cemetery, the best shore snorkelling on the beach over a shallow reef close in. Seven Mile Beach runs along the west coast of Grand Cayman, just north of George Town and a short drive from the cruise terminal and Owen Roberts airport. Public access points with parking and restrooms sit at intervals along the coast road, with Public Beach and Governors Beach the easiest for a free spot on the sand.
Bring reef safe sun cover, water and a mask, since the snorkelling is best at the northern Cemetery Beach end. The water is usually calm, but watch for boat traffic near the moorings and read any flags, as formal lifeguard cover is limited. Stay for the sunset, which faces straight out to sea.
