Grotticelle Beach
Best for. Couples who want the clearest turquoise water in Calabria, with three little white sand coves to choose from and a sheltered corner to claim.
Best spot. Take the path down early to the quieter outer cove, or swim out to the rocks between the bays where the water is glassiest.
Know this. Some sand is reserved for the hotels above, and the car park and steps fill in August, so arrive early for both space and the calmest water.
Grotticelle is the cove a couple comes to Capo Vaticano hoping to find. Below the famous headland, three small beaches of white sand sit linked by low rock, and the water in front of them turns the kind of turquoise that you associate with the tropics rather than the toe of Italy. It carries a Blue Flag for its cleanliness and clarity, and on a calm day it is the loveliest swimming on this whole stretch of coast.
What makes it work for two is the choice the geography gives you. Because it is really three coves rather than one, you can wander between them until you find the quieter corner, then settle on the sand or swim out to the rocks between the bays where the sea is glassiest and full of fish for a lazy snorkel. The setting is green and rocky and low key, a world away from the bustle of the Tropea town beach a short drive north.
The honest catch is that the secret is well known to Italians. The coves are small, parts of the sand are reserved for the smart hotels on the slope above, and the public stretches, the car park and the steps down all fill from late morning in July and August. The water is still magnificent, the crowd simply arrives. Come early for the clearest, quietest version, claim a cove while the light is soft, and Grotticelle gives a couple the turquoise day they drove south for.
Clubs on this beach
Grotticelle is a run of natural coves rather than a club beach, served by seasonal lidos and the hotels above. The quieter, polished option sits a little north at Riaci, while the coves themselves run on sunbed concessions. Day rates and any minimum spend move with the season, so ask when you enquire.
Grotticelle lido concessions
Seasonal sunbed and umbrella concessions on the coves, with a bar or kiosk behind the sand for shade and a cold drink. The easy option for a lounger right on the turquoise water. Operator, day rate and any minimum spend to be confirmed.
Le Roccette
A hotel beach lido set on the rocks toward Riaci, just north of Capo Vaticano, with sunbeds on a sheltered stretch and clear water for a swim. A quieter, more comfortable alternative to the busy coves. Day access and any minimum spend to be confirmed.
Capo Vaticano, Calabria
Grotticelle lies at Capo Vaticano in the comune of Ricadi, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. The nearest airport is Lamezia Terme, around an hour and a quarter by car, and Tropea, the main town and rail stop, is a short drive north. A road runs down to a car park at the edge of the beach, with steps and paths to the sand.
Because the beach sits below low cliffs and hotels, the final approach is on foot down steps from the car park. In high summer arrive early for the parking and the quieter coves, and bring water, shade and a mask, since the rocky inlets between the bays are the best of the snorkelling.

Common questions about Grotticelle
Is Grotticelle good for couples?
Yes, it is one of the most romantic swims in Calabria. The three little white sand coves and the turquoise Blue Flag water let two people find a quieter corner, and an early start gives you a cove almost to yourselves. It is calmer and clearer than the busy Tropea town beach a short drive north.
Is Grotticelle beach free?
The public sand is open and free, though some stretches are reserved for the hotels above and sunbeds are a paid extra. Aim for the public sections and the outer coves for free space, and bring a little cash for parking and a lounger if you want one.
How crowded does Grotticelle get?
The coves are small, so the public sand, the car park and the steps fill from late morning in July and August. The water stays magnificent, but space is tight at peak times. An early start, or a swim out to the rocks between the coves, keeps the day calm and the snorkelling clear.
Are there facilities at Grotticelle?
Yes, more than at many Calabrian coves. There are toilets, showers and changing, a car park by the sand, sunbed hire and some seasonal watersports. Food is limited to kiosks and the hotels above, so bring water and a picnic if you want a long, slow day.
Can you swim and snorkel at Grotticelle?
Yes, the clear Blue Flag water and the rocky inlets between the three coves make it one of the best snorkels on the coast in calm conditions. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and there is no promise of lifeguard cover, so read the day, stay near the shore and treat the sea as unsupervised.
