Buzios sits on a slim peninsula a few hours east of Rio de Janeiro, and like the rest of this coast it runs on the Southern Hemisphere calendar, so its summer falls over our winter and its quiet season over our summer. The town has two faces. From December to March it is hot, busy and expensive, packed with Cariocas and a big Argentine crowd who come for the beaches by day and the bars and restaurants of Rua das Pedras by night. From May to September it is calm, dry and noticeably cheaper, with sunny days, cooler evenings and far fewer people on the sand.

When each month earns its place
December to February. The full Brazilian summer and the most expensive weeks of the year. Days are hot, the sea is warm and the nights run late on Rua das Pedras, but this is also when Buzios is busiest, with Cariocas and Argentines booking the best rooms early and rates at their highest. Expect short heavy afternoon storms that clear quickly, and budget accordingly, because you are paying peak prices for peak buzz. New Year and Carnival are the very top of the market, so reserve far ahead or look just outside those dates.
March. One of the smartest weeks to aim for. The sea is at its warmest of the year, the heat has softened a touch and the summer crowds thin out fast once Carnival passes, which takes the edge off prices. You get summer water with autumn calm, a combination that is hard to beat if you can travel after the schools go back.
April and May. The value heart of the year. The weather is still warm and increasingly dry, the sea stays comfortable into April, and room rates drop well below the summer peak as the town quietens. May in particular pairs reliable sunny days with low rainfall and real bargains, so it is our pick for travellers who want the beaches without the markup.
June to September. The dry winter. Days are mild and sunny with very little rain, evenings are cool and the sea drops to around 22 degrees, which is swimmable for many but bracing for some. This is the cheapest and quietest stretch, with the lowest rates and the most room on the sand. July brings a gastronomy festival and a short school holiday bump, and August often turns breezy, which suits kitesurfers more than sunbathers. October and November. The shoulder back into summer. Temperatures and sea both climb, the first proper showers return and prices start their march upward as the high season approaches.
