The one truly public beach on Bora Bora, Matira lays a long tongue of soft white sand into a lagoon so shallow you can wade out for a hundred metres over sand and clear water. It ranks first for putting the island's famous water within reach of everyone, no resort key required. The snorkelling is gentle near the point, the sunsets are the nightly event, and a few simple bars back the sand. Go early or late to have the best of it before the day trippers arrive.
