The classic south coast beach and the easiest to love, a palm backed crescent of golden sand with a lively row of bars and the island main whale watching harbour at one end. It is simple to reach by train to nearby Weligama or Matara then a short tuk tuk, which is why it is busy in the December to April season. The swimming is good when calm but the shore break can be strong, so read the water. Come for the crescent, the sunset bars and the blue whale trips from December to April.
