The verdict

  • Best for: Walkers, photographers and couples who want a long, wild, uncrowded Atlantic beach with soft pink toned sand and few other people.
  • Best spot: The open stretch below the bluff near the French Leave resort access, where the pink cast of the sand shows best in low light.
  • Know this: This is the open Atlantic side, so surf and current can be lively; it is for walking and paddling more than carefree swimming.

The honest read

French Leave Beach runs along the Atlantic side of Eleuthera just south of Governor's Harbour, named for the resort that sits above it on the old Club Med site. It is a long, wide sweep of soft sand with a gentle pink cast that comes from crushed coral and pink shell mixed through the white, most obvious when the low sun warms the colour at the start and end of the day. Even in season you can often walk a long way here and pass almost no one, which on an island beach of this quality is the real luxury.

The catch, and the honest part, is that this is the open Atlantic shore. The water is clear and inviting to look at, but it can carry swell and current, so French Leave is at its best for long walks, paddling and photographs rather than easy lounging swims. When you want a calm, protected dip, Eleuthera's bay side beaches a short drive away are the safer choice, and locals will tell you the same. On a settled day the swimming is fine near the shore, but you should read the sea before you commit and never assume calm.

Facilities are minimal and to be confirmed, so come prepared with water, snacks and shade, since the open sand offers little cover. The reward for that self sufficiency is space and quiet that busier islands cannot match. It suits anyone who values a wild, beautiful, uncommercial beach over sunbeds and a bar, and it pairs well with the pastel charm of Governor's Harbour just up the road for food and supplies.

Clubs on this beach

French Leave is a wild public beach with no club on the sand. For serviced beach days, see our Bahamas beach clubs directory.

1

No club on the sand

French Leave has no beach club or public sunbed hire on the sand; the resort above keeps a low profile and the beach stays wild and open. Any service is for resort guests and to be confirmed, so day visitors should plan to be self sufficient.

Eleuthera is a quiet island with few formal beach clubs, so serviced days are scarce and centred on hotels. Use our directory to see the current options, opening status and any minimum spend, all of which can change and are to be confirmed.

Getting there and essentials

French Leave Beach sits just south of Governor's Harbour on the Atlantic side of central Eleuthera, a few minutes by car from the settlement and roughly mid island between North Eleuthera and Rock Sound airports. A hire car is the usual way to get around the island, and the beach is reached by short access paths from the road and the resort above.

Access to the sand is free. Stock up on water and food in Governor's Harbour first, as facilities on the beach are minimal and to be confirmed, and bring your own shade for the open sand. There is no lifeguard, so judge the Atlantic surf and current carefully, keep within your depth and treat conditions as typical rather than guaranteed.

Common questions

Why is it called French Leave Beach?

It takes its name from the French Leave resort on the bluff above, built on the site of a former Club Med. The beach is open to the public, and the name now stands for this long, wild stretch of Atlantic sand just south of Governor's Harbour.

Is the sand really pink at French Leave Beach?

It has a soft pink cast rather than a vivid pink, caused by crushed coral and pink shell mixed through the white sand. The colour is most noticeable in the warm light of early morning and late evening, and it is gentler than the deeper pink of southern Eleuthera beaches.

Is French Leave Beach safe for swimming?

It is the open Atlantic side, so the water can carry swell and current and is best for walking and paddling rather than carefree swimming. On settled days a dip near the shore is fine, but there is no lifeguard, so read the sea, swim within your limits and treat conditions as typical and never guaranteed.

Are there facilities at French Leave Beach?

Facilities are minimal and to be confirmed, so plan to be self sufficient. There is no public beach club or sunbed hire, so bring water, food and shade, and stock up in nearby Governor's Harbour, which has shops and restaurants a few minutes away.

Is French Leave Beach worth visiting?

If you want a long, wild, uncrowded beach with soft pink toned sand, yes, it is one of central Eleuthera's highlights. If you want loungers, a bar and easy calm swimming, you would do better on the island's protected bay side beaches a short drive away.
