Alanya sits on the long, sheltered curve of Turkey's southern coast, where the Taurus mountains drop almost to the water and the swimming season runs from late spring deep into autumn. The shape of the year is simple to read. High summer is hot, dry and busy, the shoulder months on either side are warm and far gentler, and the sea lags the air so it keeps its heat long after the fiercest temperatures have eased. That last point matters most for a planner, because it means the quiet weeks of September and October still offer genuinely warm swimming with a fraction of the people on the sand.

What follows is the year broken down month by month for the things that actually shape a beach day here, the air, the sea, the rainfall and the crowd, with an honest verdict for each. We are plain about July and August, which bring guaranteed sun and the warmest water but also heavy daytime heat and the fullest central beaches. We are just as plain about why May, June, September and October suit most travellers better, with warm water, kinder air for walking the headland, and the pine forest beaches to the west at their most peaceful. For anyone who comes for the nature rather than the noise, the shoulder months are the whole point.

The notable months

When each month earns its place

May. The season opens in earnest and it is the naturalist's favourite. The air is warm rather than fierce, the sea has climbed to a swimmable temperature, and the beaches are still wide open and quiet. It is the ideal month for pairing a swim with the pine forest at Incekum or a long walk under the castle, since you can spend the day outdoors in comfort. A calm, good value time, with the heat and the crowds yet to arrive.

June. Early summer at its best. The sea is reliably warm, the sun is strong and dependable, and the daytime heat, while real, has not reached the August extreme. The central sand is busy but not overwhelmed, and the long light makes the most of both the town bays and a trip out west to the forest beaches. For a classic Alanya beach week with warm water and a margin of comfort, June is hard to beat.

July and August. The peak in every sense. The sun is guaranteed and the sea is at its warmest, but daytime temperatures sit in the mid thirties and the coastal humidity can feel heavy, so this is heat to respect with shade, water and a slow break through the hottest hours. The central beaches such as Cleopatra and Damlatas are at their fullest, and prices are highest. The swimming is superb, best early and late in the day, and for room to breathe the western pine coves repay the short drive. Book stays well ahead.

September. For many the best month of all. The fierce edge comes off the heat, the sea is still summer warm from the long season, and the crowds thin noticeably once the school holidays end. Everything is still open and running, the light softens over the headland, and the forest beaches turn quiet and gentle again. If you can travel in September you get close to peak warmth with far more space and kinder conditions, which is exactly what a slow traveller wants.

October. The quiet reward. The sea holds its warmth in the mid twenties through much of the month, the air is comfortable for both swimming and walking, and the coast is calm and good value. Rain grows a little more likely toward the end and some seasonal sunbed hire begins to wind down, but a warm sea, resinous pine air and near empty sand make early autumn one of the loveliest and most natural times to visit Alanya.

Good questions

Before you go

When is the best time to visit Alanya for the beach?

Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spots, roughly May and June and again September and October, with warm sea, strong sun and far lighter crowds than the July and August peak. The sea holds its summer warmth well into October, so the shoulder months give the best balance of heat, comfort and quiet. High summer is reliably hot and sunny but busiest, and the pine backed coves to the west are at their most peaceful outside the peak weeks.

How hot does Alanya get in summer?

Very hot. July and August routinely reach the mid thirties Celsius in the day and stay warm at night, with strong sun and high humidity along the coast. It is fine beach weather if you respect the heat, with shade, water and a slow midday, but the wilder, shadeless stretches are kinder in the morning or in the shoulder months. Spring and autumn are far more comfortable for walking the headland and the forest beaches.

How warm is the sea in Alanya by month?

The Mediterranean at Alanya warms from around eighteen degrees in April to the low twenties by June, peaks near twenty eight or twenty nine in August, and holds in the mid twenties through September and October. That gives one of the longest comfortable swimming seasons on the Turkish coast, roughly May into November in a warm year. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Can you swim in Alanya in October?

Usually yes, and happily so. The sea keeps its warmth into October, often in the mid twenties, while the air cools to gentle beach weather, so early autumn is a lovely time to swim with the sand half empty. Rain becomes a little more likely later in the month, but a warm sea and quiet coves make October one of the best value and most natural times to visit. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

When is Alanya least crowded for a beach holiday?

The quietest warm weeks are in May and early June and again from mid September through October, when the weather is still good for swimming but the school holiday rush has passed. Winter is very quiet but too cool for regular swimming. For a calm beach day with warm water and room to spread out, aim for the shoulder months and the western pine beaches rather than the central sand in July and August.

Is the sea calm for swimming in Alanya?

Generally yes through the summer. The bays around the headland are typically calm and clear in the warm months, and the gently shelving forest beaches to the west, such as Incekum, are the easiest of all. Brief wind and small swell can stir the water on changeable days, more so in spring and autumn, so check the daily picture. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, and there is no swimming safety promise.
